Bolsena

A place to experience,
not just to visit.

Bolsena

What to See

Bolsena is a village to be discovered step by step. Nestled on the shores of its namesake lake, it preserves a rare balance between nature, history and spirituality.

Among the narrow streets of the historic centre, Castello Monaldeschi towers over the village and houses the Museo Territoriale del Lago di Bolsena, featuring Etruscan, Roman and medieval artefacts. Nearby, the Basilica di Santa Cristina and the early Christian Catacombs tell the story of the deep-seated devotion, rooted in the Eucharistic Miracle of 1263 and the solemnity of Corpus Domini. From the upper village, a unique view opens over the lake and the hills of Tuscia: a landscape that stretches all the way to Parco di Turona, a protected natural area rich in springs, trails and woodlands. For archaeology enthusiasts, the sites of Poggio Moscini and Poggio Pesce–Battaglini are also worth visiting, where traces of the Etruscan-Roman city of Volsinii are preserved.

Itineraries through Spirituality, Culture and Nature

Day 1: History, Miracles and Stunning Views

Morning
Start your journey in the Castello quarter, the medieval village that towers over the town. Lose yourself among the flower-lined alleyways and visit the Rocca Monaldeschi: inside, the Museo Territoriale and the Aquarium will tell you the story of the place, while from the top of the towers you will enjoy the finest view over the entire basin.

Afternoon
Head down towards the centre to immerse yourself in spirituality. The Basilica di Santa Cristina is an essential stop to admire the stones of the Eucharistic Miracle and descend into the evocative Catacombs. After your visit, treat yourself to a coffee or artisan gelato by the lake or in town.

Evening
Stay in Bolsena for dinner. Local restaurants offer the perfect atmosphere to savour traditional meat-based dishes, perhaps paired with the region’s fine wines.

Day 2: Crystal Waters and Archaeology

Morning
Dedicate your morning to the lake. From the tourist harbour, board the ferries heading to Isola Bisentina and Isola Martana: cruising across the crystal-clear waters is the best way to experience Bolsena’s volcanic nature.

Afternoon
Back on land, stroll along the lakefront in the shade of towering plane trees and among colourful hydrangeas. If you love ancient history, take a short detour to the archaeological excavations of Poggio Moscini (Volsinii) to walk along ancient Roman roads. Otherwise, enjoy some relaxation on the beach or shop for local products.

Evening
End the weekend with a romantic dinner on the lakefront. It’s time to taste the famous coregone or fried lake fish, admiring the sunset reflected on the water, promising yourself you’ll return.

Don’t miss the Acquario di Bolsena inside the fortress to discover the secrets of the lake’s depths.

The first evening is perfect for a traditional dinner inside the medieval walls. Let yourself be tempted by the earthy flavours of Tuscia, accompanied by a good glass of local wine, enveloped by the evocative illumination of the historic alleyways.

Day 2: The Lake's Embrace

Morning
It’s time to experience the lake as a protagonist. Reach the tourist harbour and embark on a panoramic tour towards Isola Bisentina and Isola Martana. Admiring Bolsena from the water offers a unique perspective and allows you to appreciate the clarity of this volcanic lake.

Afternoon
After a light lunch at one of the lakefront restaurants, enjoy a stroll in the shade of centuries-old plane trees and through flowering gardens. If the season permits, the black sand beaches are perfect for a refreshing swim or water sports.

Evening
At sunset, the lakefront is tinged with warm, romantic colours. It’s the ideal moment for an aperitivo with a lake view or to savour the true star of the local table: coregone or eel, prepared according to local tradition.

Day 3: Archaeology and Traditions

Morning
Discover the town’s ancient roots by visiting the archaeological area of Poggio Moscini (Volsinii). Here you can walk among the remains of the Roman city and admire the domus del dipinto. For trekking lovers, a short stretch of the Via Francigena offers direct contact with nature and silence.

Afternoon
Before leaving, take home a “tasty” memory. Dedicate your last few hours to gastronomic shopping: Tuscia’s extra virgin olive oil, local wines and traditional sweets are the perfect souvenirs.

Evening
Bid farewell to Bolsena from the Belvedere or with a final stroll at the harbour. If you’re fortunate, your trip might coincide with one of the many cultural events or festivals that enliven the town, giving you one last festive memory.
