ButNot4Trane takes shape as a linguistic and conceptual play, in which the quartet’s multiple musical identities converge. The title operates on several levels: evident is the allusion to But Not (For Me), the celebrated standard by George Gershwin and symbol of a consolidated jazz tradition; then the number 4, a numerical synthesis of the quartet’s chamber formation; finally, the citation of Trane, pseudonym of John Coltrane, pivotal figure and inexhaustible source of inspiration for the improvisational approach and sonic poetics that permeate the entire work.
At once the name of the project and title of the album, ButNot4Trane becomes a symbolic meeting place between different generations, heterogeneous compositional poetics and complementary aesthetic visions. The result is a cohesive, intense and conscious work that returns to the listener the echo of an authentic search, deeply rooted in tradition but oriented toward a constant innovative tension. A debut that, despite its formal balance, reveals marked expressive maturity and a clear artistic identity.
