Festa delle Ortensie

The Festival, which takes place along Viale Colesanti, hosts exhibitors and florists from all over Italy and beyond for three days. Each year for three days they arrive in Bolsena with their plants, fragrances and colors, creating a fairytale atmosphere.

Bolsena’s bond with hydrangeas comes from far back, from the early 1900s when the first specimens of this ornamental plant native to Asia, particularly China and Japan, were planted in the villas along Viale Colesanti and on the lakefront.
Thanks to the volcanic soil, rich in minerals, and the abundance of water, hydrangeas thrived immediately, to the point that today there are approximately 120 varieties scattered throughout the village.
The Friends of Hydrangeas Association was created precisely to promote the cultivation of Hydrangea, the scientific name for the hydrangea, which spread throughout Italy and Europe for its magnificent blooms that put on a show throughout the summer. It spreads knowledge of its secrets, both through direct promotion efforts and by establishing relationships in Italy and internationally with associations, specialized nurseries and growers.
The constant promotional activity finds its highest point in the Festa delle Ortensie, which attracts thousands of visitors to the shores of Lake Bolsena at each edition and confirms itself, year after year, as one of the most anticipated events of the Tuscia summer landscape.

During the three days of the market exhibition you can:

  • Admire over 120 varieties of hydrangeas, present in the green spaces of Viale Colesanti and the lakefront, from classic pastel colors to the most vibrant and intense shades.
  • Discover unique and precious specimens from different parts of Italy and the world.
  • Learn more about the history and cultivation of these splendid plants.
