Processione del Venerdì Santo
The procession winds through the streets of the historic center of Bolsena, creating an evocative and solemn atmosphere, and retraces the pivotal moments of Jesus's final hours, from his condemnation to death to the crucifixion.
The event involves numerous costumed performers who portray biblical characters and Roman soldiers. The scenes are represented with great realism and emotional intensity, engaging both participants and spectators.
The Passion procession begins in Piazza Santa Cristina with the representation of the “Last Supper”. It then continues ascending toward the Castello quarter with the encounter with Pontius Pilate (gardens beside Piazza Matteotti), the Flagellation (in front of the Church of SS.Salvatore), the falls through the streets of Bolsena, concluding with the final scene—the Crucifixion—which is represented on the churchyard of the Basilica di Santa Cristina, with scenography that takes advantage of the high boundary wall. Thanks to this wall, the pathos and emotion reach their climax due to the imposing setting of the Crucifixion of Jesus and the two thieves. The scenic reconstruction with lights, crosses and soundtrack creates a profound emotional impact.
The tradition is deeply felt by the local community, which participates with great devotion, and it is a moment of profound spiritual reflection for believers. For non-believers, the Procession remains nonetheless a moment of great historical and cultural value in a context of remarkable charm.
