Pietre Lanciate (Thrown Stones)
They are a unique phenomenon and are part of the Site of Community Interest and Special Protection Area "Monti Vulsinii".

The formation of the pietre lanciate, immortalized since ancient times in prints and engravings, captured the curiosity of the many travelers who set out on the journey to Rome over the centuries.
Entering Bolsena from the Rome side, about one kilometer from the town, you can notice a very rare archaeological monument: a strange basaltic rock wall made up of prisms of volcanic rock that emerge from the ground and remind us of some phases of the volcanic activity of the area.
They are known as pietre lanciate (thrown stones) and are lava flows whose lower part cooled over longer periods, taking on this unusual appearance.
They are a unique phenomenon and therefore are part of the Site of Community Interest and Special Protection Area “Monti Vulsinii”.
